Change Order

There is always the possibility
that our positions have reversed and what
is said could be taken literally or just
provided with a subscript that would explain
what is really meant. The weather turns cool
even in spring when the sun slides through
the windows looking for a place to lie
just for a second. We promise ourselves
no more TV and find time to entertain
but still fall into bed exhausted
from the job of carving out a ledge
in the face of unending competition
furrowed through with chances for escape.
A lack of luster or coffee or short glances
and everything is thrown out of balance,
dumped into oblivion and we start again,
wondering what could have been done differently.
