After a fitful night's sleep

What to make of today's reconstitution
of the world and the sea and time spent
yesterday in anger now distant as a sail
on the past horizon slowly disappearing
submerging below the level only to erupt
again this time closer and larger and
threatening to disrupt the even keel
and smooth finishes that we polish every
day to keep the cracks from bleeding through
though the sun is shining and we deepen
and grow more nuanced and careful
holding each other in embrace
weakened through support
older than we thought we were
further from the shore
than we ought to be.
