The changes have already begun,
like bacteria in a recently deceased cat,
under the surface, growing exponentially.
To everyone's eyes, we each seem perfectly normal,
a little stress at the edges perhaps
but nothing everybody else doesn't have.
Imperceptably, the distance grows
between the species until whole phyla
are created with taxonomical variety.
And this through irritation, a pin prick
at an amoeba's skin or a reaction to the sun,
or this: it is time for a change.
We leave our families and our kind
behind, drifting into the past --
fossils to be uncovered and wondered about.
