the egyptians stood accused of using pictures
to tell the stories of kings and gods
when all they did was show the sounds
of the words themselves, lined up like slaves
the sounds built the stories of harvest, flood,
harvest: an endless battering ram of routine
that lasted through a hundred dynasties
until the greeks came along and thought
they were the birth of civilization
