There is no poem today
in honor of the blistering attacks
and oppressive heat, the family-friendly
coalitions and the economically challenged.
We have nothing today to align ourselves
on the right side of the aisle or
hear from the alternate viewpoint,
sitting here in studio or out on the street.
Today is the day for counterpoint and rebuttal.
The forefront in the continuing war
begins in our own backyard. They and them,
don't want us and ours to have
the sweetened pot and the forgotten soldiers,
the mortar shells and shaggy dog stories,
tremendous weight loss and honor students;
the black and white of red and blue,
and finally, coming up next, our final feature.
