Old Man

falling into the street
into oncoming traffic
slow motion: hip
followed by ribcage
then the slap
of his head against
the newly laid asphalt
on a hundred plus degree
day in Phoenix in August.

driving past, slowing
but still driving past
while he lifted himself
off the heated tarmac and
sat on the sidewalk
wondering how
he came to be here
from so long ago
and so far away
